The Constitution: A Brief History and The Preamble

The Constitution of the United States defines the structure of the government of The United States of America. It was signed on September 17th, 1787 by 39 of the 42 present delegates. It was written in Philadelphia, PA, in the same building as the Declaration of Independence, now known as Independence Hall. December 7th 1787 Delaware became the first state to ratify the Constitution. On June 21, 1788 the Constitution became effective for the ratifying states when the ninth state, New Hampshire, ratified the Constitution.
