The Original America Month: Part 3 - The Ethos of America

The Declaration of Independence is the ethos of America. It encapsulates nearly every aspect what it means to be an American. A lot of people dismiss the contents of the Declaration of Independence since it is not the Constitution but the Constitution is built off of the contents of the Declaration of Independence. America cannot exist without it’s citizens and people living by the Declaration of Independence.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

The above line is the most important line written in any political document. It observes that rights do not come from governments or man but our Creator. Acknowledging this fact cannot be overlooked. When it is, terrible things happen. If people look to the government to give them rights they lose all rights.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government

Any Government that prevents these rights from our Creator is an unjust Government and the people have the right and obligation to remedy the Government to bring these rights back.
